I bought two new 1979 Trans Ams in late 1978-early 1979. Both had the TA 6.6 Pontiac engine with four speed transmissions and WS6 performance/handling packages with rear disc brakes. One was black/gold and the other was a silver 10 year anniversary model with leather (not vinyl) interior.
They are kind of low tech today but were the best performing American made car in 1979.
The TA 6.6 cars were rather rare as Pontiac stopped making the 400 CI V8 engine in 1978 but inentoried several thousand for use in the 1979 models. In 1979 the TA 6.6 was available only with the four speed manual transmission which limited sales. The regular 6.6 (Oldsmodile 403) engined cars are worth considerably less.
