I've been putting gas and diesel in 2.5 gallon plastic oil jugs for years. Easier to handle than 5 gallon size, no spouts to mess with, and free! I use a steel funnel that screws into the tractor fuel tank, and can do it all from the ground (not husky enough anymore to heft a 5 gallon can over my head without spilling).
Back in the old days, I had tanks at the farm- but don't use enough anymore to justify it, and you can't store gas anymore without it going stale.
