The consensus is that Win7 is much better than Vista. The big concern is the hardware you need to upgrade from WinXP to either Vista or 7. If you have an older computer, you will not be happy with either one so stick with XP. Get a new computer that comes with Win7 when you want to upgrade and you will be much happier.
Take my advice for what it's worth since I mostly use Linux.
