Reminds me of my Aunt Edna; happened in about 1934 (I've posted the long version before, probably on KL). short version: She was married to a drunk........who was off on a drunk. She and her 2 sons (about 2 and 4 years old) had planted an early Spring garden and were resting on the front porch. The (tenant house, they were sharecroppers) house sat way back in the field and she saw ...up on the road........ a couple on foot, coming to visit (no one in the whole family owned a vehicle). It was/could only be her parents. She only had corn meal in the house and knew her parents would be staying for dinner (lunch). She didn't want them to know how poorly she was faring, so she and her boys went back into the garden and dug up the just-planted potatoes, to have for dinner. I'd heard this story for years and not long before she died, I asked her about it; it was indeed true. She eventually moved to Oregon in the late 40s, became an LPN and lived a middle-class life.
