A recent set-up is gaining popularity with horse owners for biting flies: mount a good sized basin 3-4 ft above ground with some sheet metal around it - whole thing is painted black. Basin has a soap/water mixture. Biting flies attracted to dark horses more than light coloured horses. They investigate and get caught in the soup. One of my horse customers picked one up 2 weeks back - says it works well, but you could fabricate one fairly easily too.
