Banvel will work on thistles.
The secret to killing them is to hit them hard in fall time period - in spring they move sap from the root up to the seed bud, so spraying them in spring only burns the top off a bit, does not kill them. If you can spray them in a few more weeks they are then moving sap down to the roots back to storage - the herbicide will then be carried down to the root & kill them much much better.
Your Crossbow likely would work the same.
