Most of you guys, including me, who have worked on old tractors have been through this situation before but I have to vent about this one.
A friend asked me if I'd put the mag back on his 48 JD B. I said 'sure, why not! I'm kind of busy trying to get this military vehicle done but throwing a mag on will take fifteen minutes so I can come over after supper and do it.
A little history on this B, it's one he picked up maybe 6 or 7 years ago. It'd been well cared for as a whole but a little worn. I got it running for him including going through the carb. It idled smoother than any B I have ever seen.
So, back to the story. I get to the tractor, pull #1 plug, stick my finger in the hole turn it over and there's no compression. Stuck valve! So I timed it by bringin #2 up on compression. Put the mag on. Battery was a little low so we pulled it to start it but #2 piston hydraulic locked. Shut off the gas, pulled the plug wires off the mag, opened the petcocks, pulled it and gas flew up out of the muffler and down through the petcock. Took the carb off and it was mighty rusty. Now my little 15 minute job that I wasn't too wild about in the first place was getting long. Took the carb apart. Bowl was full of rust and the float had gas in it. Took the carb home and pulled it apart. Put the body and bowl in the electrolysis tank while I run up to Roberts Carb for gaskets, float and needle and seat. Got it back together after a quick blowing out, went back to the tractor. Pulled the valve cover and had to use my slide puller to get #1 exhaust valve to pop back out. Put valve cover back on, throw the carb back on, open the petcocks and out comes ANTIFREEZE!!!! Remember, folks, I didn't want to do this in the first place!!!!! Pull started it but it doesn't idle well, so there's something down in the idle passage. Gassy oil was coming out the fan shaft so the crankcase is just a little overfull huh? Told him to try black pepper in the rad. Left and went home to the project that wasn't getting done while I was trying to revive a dead horse. GRRRR. Jim

Today's Featured Article - Third Brush Generators - by Chris Pratt. While I love straightening sheet metal, cleaning, and painting old tractors, I use every excuse to avoid working on the on the electrics. I find the whole process sheer mystery. I have picked up and attempted to read every auto and farm electrics book with no improvement in the situation. They all seem to start with a chapter entitled "Theory of Electricity". After a few paragraphs I usually close the book and go back to banging out dents. A good friend and I were recently discussing our tractor electrical systems when he stated "I figure it all comes back to applying Ohms Law". At this point
