Thursday/this afternoon I'm going to look at an abandoned storage unit who's owner is deceased. It's been sitting for awhile and now the the management needs help cleaning out. My understanding, so far, from a phone conversation is that it is full of equipment from a shoe repair shop. Most of the stuff in the unit is too heavy to move by hand so they want me to use the crane on my truck tomove the equipment and clean it out. My understanding it didn't sell at auction and so now they just want to get rid of it but aren't equipped to do it due to the machine weights. I'm going to at least look at it because I'm figuring even with scrap value on everything I will stand to make a little bit on the deal, and anything worth keeping or selling is just icing on the cake.
That said, one of the items has been described as a buffing machine that's like 8' long, 5' tall, and about 3' deep. Looking online used/reconditioned machines similar to this are going anywhere from $5000 to $12,000 so I'm hoping for a little more than scrap value. Too I was told there are several varieties of sewing machines ($1500 to $5000 plus each depending on type), along with material, and various other benches, shelves, etc, etc.
I've been doing a little research so far and have found a few places that handle used shoe repair equipment, and I've also been thinking there might be a market for people doing other types of leather work as well.
Now, my question. Does anyone know of of any other markets I should look into that might have a use for eqipment like the buffer, industrial sewing machines,etc?
One more question while I'm at it. Does anyone have a clue why the shoe repair equipment companies all seem to take a 'vacation' around the same time? I called two places, one in NY, and another in Canada and got messages at both saying they were completely closed and 'on vacation', one til Aug first, another til the tenth. I saw another just before posting this who's website said they were on vacation the whole month of August........What gives, if all mechanics, farmers, etc took a vacation at the same time nothing would get done....I guess repairing shoes isn't a real high priority, or it simply pays REALLY GOOD to the point that they can all afford to take all that time off.......Like I said, just curious if anyone knows what's going on with this????
