Just as Dean said but this may help you a bit more. Lay your left hand on the front tire and your right on on the starter. Kneel down and right in front of you just below the edge of the head you will see a flat spot. That is where the serial number should be. Be very careful when you clean that area because they are hand stamped and if you use a knife etc you can remember the number. My self I use a little carb cleaner on a rag and rub hard. By the way if it is a front mount distributor it is a 1948 to early 1950. If it has the side mount then it is a late 1950 to 1952
