Oh boy. Even Dubya came up with a better excuse than that. Of course his excuse relied on non-existent WMDs, but at least it made sense within the fantasy world of the Bush administration.
Wars are fought for one thing and one thing only: To get what you want when you can't get it any other way. So what did we get out of the Iraq war? A huge debt, thousands of dead servicemembers, tens of thousands more who are maimed and whom we'll have to take care of indefinitely. Oh, and an Iraq that is decidedly less stable than when Saddam ran it.
I'm not sure why you want to make a comparison with the American Revolution. We generally don't think of the US being the aggressor in the Revolution, but we were clearly the aggressor in Iraq.
