In today's world, it's hard and probably rare that you get a HS diploma and walk out into a job that will give you a career path. But college is not for everyone. My daughters all went to college right out of HS. One had a boyfriend that didn't know what he wanted to do and was kind of aimless about his life. She broke up with him partly due to his partying and lack of purpose. He went into the Air Force and after 2 yrs came out with focus and purpose. He is finishing college and applying to Med school. They're back together now and it appears to be a good lasting relationship. Going into the military was a great move for him and several others that I know.
I don't think it's a bad thing that kids who are not sure what they want to do in life opt for the military. The military teaches young people skills that were routinely taught in apprenticeship programs that are dwindling.
I also don't think the military is simply a "job-training" program. I admire those that serve with dedication and put their lives on the line like the servicemen who died over the weekend. Very sorry for the loss to their families and our country. I just don't think our leaders consider the individual consequences of their decisions to exercise our military might.
By this I mean that the current war in Afghanistan bears a striking resemblance to the war of my youth (Vietnam). It is a quagmire with little likelihood that we'll be able to declare a "victory" on any day in the future and leave with the knowledge that what we're doing there will have a lasting impact. This is in contrast to Iraq which appears to be able to sustain a civilized society after we leave. I just don't think the Afghan people have the will and backbone to stand up to the Taliban when the chips are down.
