I see no reason why he shouldn't set his price where he wants it. If he's worth it, he'll get what he's asking. I doubt he'll be lowering his prices. All through high school and college I worked for extra money either helping other farmers or working for a landscaping company. I set my hourly price for helping other farmers, and I never had a shortage of work. I did turn several people away who thought that $5/hr was good enough pay. Why would I work for that when I had all the work I wanted at $10/hr? Only time I compromised was when an elderly farmer, 84 I believe, had a heart attack in the middle of haying season. He asked me what my hourly rate was to work for him cutting and raking hay with his equipment, and he'd hire a custom baler to come in and bale it. I told him I got $10/hr, and you could see the disappointment on his face. I asked what he was thinking, and he said he could only really afford $7. I told him no problem, I'd do it for that. I worked from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. quite a few days, but I got all his haying done in about 3 weeks. And talk about meals. His wife would bring lunch out to the field where ever I was working at 1 p.m., and then again about 6 p.m., then it was a sit down dinner with a minimum of 4 courses when I quite for the day. I figured the cooking more than made up for the $3 less in wages! Ended up being a good experience for both him and I.

It increased the farm productivity and, in general, made life easier because more work could be done with this 'mechanical beast'. My dad dreamed that some day he would have his own tractor with every implement he could get. When he rea
