Depending on how rusty the metal is , I"d use a wire wheel on a grinder to scruff it up some , sweep it clean , then brush on a rust neutralizer from an auto parts store that handles auto body paint materials .Tell them you are dealing with galvanized steel . Then I"d prime it good with Rustoleum red oxide primer .Then brush on a good coat of a good enamel paint suggested by the paint shop .After it all dries a couple days , I use a good mobil home roof coating after I do all this .HTH !Its a lot of work & extras , but it"ll last several years . There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard.
