Seeing as I've been to tractor scrap yards I've seen all kinds of tractors there. Got a relation who owns a scrap business. He has crushed quite a few. Mostly old ones like WD/WCs, IH, Case and JD. If they are in pretty fair condition he keeps em and tractors are the last thing he scraps.
2 sides to this. I don't think we will ever get to the day when they are all gone but we will get to the day that only collectors have em. As more modren tractors get cheap the hobby farmers are going to go to them. There old AC and IH's and JD's will get sold to collectors. Case in point, an old M is worth 900 to 2K based on condition. A beat up 300 utility is a 2500 dollar tractor. The M isn't good for much without adding live hydrauics and a 3 point on a farm but a 300 utility is a nice hobby farm or chore tractor. Collector tractors will get larger over time because that's what the farms have gone to.
You also have the problem of kids setteling out estates. They sell the farm an the buyer wants the old stuff off before they sign the papers. These kids are not going to spend mayby months trying to sell that old stuck WC setting in the woods. They are going to call the local scrap place. If they do try selling it they are going to ask way too much and think anyone trying to tell em what it's really worth is trying to rip them off. Then they get mad and sell it to a scrapper to prevent one of those rip off collectors from getting it.
I have an M. It gets used to pull wagons and a manure spreader. I have a Ford 8N that gets used in the garden, I plowed 10 acres this spring with it. Runs a brush cutter, post hole auger and a finish mower. That 3 point makes all the difference in the world. I also have a 1206 IH. That has a loader for round bales, runs the snow blower (important in MN) haybine and round baler.....field work too. I'm looking for a replacement for the M. For the cost of add ons I can buy a newer tractor ( really want a 3000 or 4000 Ford). The 1206 and 8N are keepers.
I love tractors but I'm not a good show goer.....To me an H is an H is an H. I can only look at so many H's. I don't really understand this collector stuff. I love owning tractors and using em but to have one, in the barn that sees daylight once or twice a year for a show or parade??????? Not knocking it, just aint my thing. I'd rather be cutting hay or fishing than at a tractor show. If it's the wrench thing that I can understand but what about doing one and then selling it. I know that most of the time you are not going to get your money out of it but it's a hobby. Hobbies cost money!
