Depends on which grant. I know two people that have gotten them. Talk with social services and see if you qualify. Around here its pretty tough, limits on income, assets, and family size. The one I know of, lady owned her own home, single mom, 4 kids, 15 buck and hour job, less than 1000 in the bank, owed as much on the house as it was worth, house was pretty unsafe. She lived in an urban area. Local building inspection handled the grant and contractors. They upgraded everything, spent about 50 grand on it, put a 50 grand lien on the house and on her for 20 years. If she gets a better job or sells the house for any more than she owes it has to be paid back, if not its forgiven.
Other one was out of TARP funds. It wasnt an improvement but it makes house payments if you are at least 60 days behind, laid off after 2008, and if you went back to work took at least a 30 percent pay cut.
