Is your driveline tight with no slack from the tranny on back? Is the throttle body gasket okay and the engine idles down to 600 rpm as it should?
If so, lift the hood and unhook that TV cable from the bottom of the throttle body on the driver's side (pull it forward to slide it off the button). Then start the truck and see if it still bangs into gear from neutral.
Banging disappears means you've just found the problem in either a binding or badly misadjusted cable.
If it is still there, make darned sure that cable is free to retract back into it's sheath (it should pull back on it's own spring pressure).
Then, if the cable seems okay, hollar back and we'll put a gauge on 'er and find your problem.
No, your dealer is wrong. He just doesn't have a transmission man. The transmission ought to be smooth as a baby's butt throughout it's entire operation.
Neutral to engagement is the main problem here and just 'screams' throttle valve circuit. 1st to second gear is secondary and will more than likely go away when we find that engagement problem.
