U.S. 71 is the official detour for I-29, but a lot of folks are using U.S. 59. Both of those roads are carrying WAY more traffic than was ever intended and several traffic accidents have occured because of the increased traffic, plus most of the drivers using those detours THINK they are still on a 4 lane, divided highway with a speed limit of 70+ m.p.h. If I was you, I'd stay right on I-70 until you are in Kansas and then go North. I THINK highway 81? will take you all the way into South Dakota, and the last time I was on that highway, it was a very good road.
