I live in North Carolina on the coast, between Wilmington and New Bern, Hwy 17. I am not a tobacco farmer, but was raised on farm all of my life until the age of about twenty. We raised flue cured tobacco, this was about seventy-five percent of our existance. My family lived and made do on very small acreage. I am very familiar with flue cured tobacco, from the seed bed, to the grading and getting ready for the warehouse floor.
This area had a very good crop this year, good height, good color and a very good crop in my opinion. The farmers had cropped one or two times, still a lot of the choice tobacco in the field, then August 27th brought hurricane Irene. Every tobacco field I have seen since is totally destroyed. Tobacco leaves are shredded and broken from the stalk. The wind has blown the whole plant over. The wind and the rain has completely ruined this crop, total loss. Maybe there is some still standing, but I have not seen it. I think this is the worse tobacco crop I have ever seen.
