I grew up a little west of Winston-Salem, NC on a family farm where flue-cured tobacco also provided a major part of the income. I was on a tobacco farm in northern Moore County, NC on Tuesday where harvesting was in process. While one field already had the empty stalks plowed up, they were taking the 3rd of 4 primings by mechanical harvester on another field that I saw. The tobacco looked good and was not harmed by Hurricane Irene.

The folks from Moore County provided our Silk Hope Ruritan Club with a trailer of tobacco leaves that we hand strung on about 80 sticks last Saturday and are curing in a wood-fired barn in preparation for our 36th annual Old Fashioned Farmers Days this coming weekend. When they came on Saturday morning, they had not yet had any rain from the hurricane - the tobacco was dry! There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard.
