I tend to hang onto stuff that I may need. I have never thrown away a tool unless it was broken/ worn out. Trick is to ORGANIZE it! Make some shelves and bins so you can get it off the floor.
High price of scrap has helped some- made a sweep through the shop a couple months ago- picked up broken parts, parts for stuff I sold long ago, etc., and scrapped it. Got $114 for less than a pickup load.
