Here in NC school started on a Friday two weeks back. Why waste time and money starting on Friday instead of waiting til a Monday...I don't know....maybe it just makes sense....... To make things even crazier kindergarden goes the one day that week and then takes several days off before going back. Top it all off with a school board that can't make up their mind when the school day starts for the trifecta. They went from a system where the school system all started at the same time to one where elementary starts at one time, middle school at another, and high school at still another. After two years of really screwing people over by having the elementary kids start so late that they had to go to daycare in the morning so the parents could get to work on time they finally realized (((( or people, like me, b!tched enough and told them how stupid their idea was enough that it finally sank in))) that the older kids could stay home alone til the bus picked them up at 8:30 or so, and got the younger kids on the bus by 7 in time for the parents to go to work.
This whole staggerd start time deal was supposed to "save" them around $400,000 a year by allowing them to run fewer busses, etc. Of course they were going to spend all of the 'savings' to get camera systems on the busses like the cops have in their cars to moniter the kids. Personally I say if they act up kick their little a$$es off and don't let them back on. If the parents have a problem with it let them figure it out for themselves how to get the brats to school and maybe when they take the initiative to kick the kids a$$ when the act up there won't be any more problems. In reality all I see the staggerd start times doing is wearing the older, more easily repairiable buses out sooner making them buy new, 'green' buses at a premium price that now have to have additional (higher cost) maintenance, urea fluid support, etc, etc. Too the whole situation also makes the kids miss more days of school because the time the busses have so spend on the road is now so long that they are afraid to even think about having school if the forcast even mentions a minute chance of snow.............Oh well, that's our elected officials hard at work 'saving' our hard earned tax money for us....

Today's Featured Article - Talk of the Town: Winterizing Engines - To Drain or Not to Drain? - by Russ Berry. What is this strange attraction I have to equipment and machinery? How did I get this way? I came from the suburbs and own a small horse farm in rural Loudoun County, Virginia. You can call me a "weekend farmer." The local farmers do. Does it bother me? No. I am just happy to have their friendship. At least the word "farmer" is in my title. But what is the attraction? How can I explain the sensation and exhilaration I feel when I turn the key and hear the engine come to life (most
