2) The coil is just to put a little heat on the fuel to help vaporize it, because unlike most other propane fueled items, this one is fed liquid from the tank. The coil can be centered in the flame, and moved into or away from the flame. I never found that adjustment to be critical. 1) I've never tried to remove a stirrer. Which end broke off? The center drive gear motor, or the reversing gear box on the outer end? Did one end of the tube drop? On my stirrer, once the carriages and augers were undone, it would be simple to unbolt the center bearing carrier, and then lift the outer end of the stirrer tube off the track, and let it down. (Provided you can walk on air!) I have climbed down through the center hole, around the spreader, to get to the shear pin on the stirrer gear motor drive. I would guess one person there with a rope, and one on the outer end of the tube with a rope, could let the tube down.
