You can pull the shaft right out of the transmission. It will not hurt a thing. You will need to do it. That is how you work on the left brake assembly. The problem is more than likely the return spring has broken on the brake shoes. Simple fix. The brakes on that series of combine are Bendix made. The 7700 and 7720 where the same as 1980 3/4 Dodge pickup. I used to keep a spring set on hand. The whole set from a parts house was cheaper than one or two springs from JD.
