As I mentioned the other day we have completed corn harvest mostly because of working alot of hours that maybe we didnt have to but it is kind of the way we do things. Always in motion and TRYING to go forward! On saturday about noon I took a few minutes to spend a little time will a fellow YTer. John730D and his wife tracked me down. As you all know Im not really to hard to find but they took time out of their day to stop in to visit in the corner of a field and share a few stories. It is always great to put a name with a face and it seems we all share the same love of rural america and so many of us have the same roots. Really enjoyed spending time with John and his wife. Here are a few pics from this fall. It safe to say we are a little old school. In todays farm world it seems semi trucks and giant auger wagons are in fashion. We use six of these wagons to do about 95 percent of our harvest. Each set can hold about a max of 800 bu. so we can have well over 2000bu in motion at one time. It works for us but its not for everyone.
It has been a very pleasant fall but this day we caught a little shower. It lasted about half the afternoon but never stopped us as we picked till the early morning hours of the next day to keep the bin dryers full and running.
This pic was last saturday. A beautiful sunny day to harvest in the heart of the corn belt. It was a suprise to find corn yielding over 150bpa on a very wet farm that is 5th year corn, a very nice suprise after the summer we had!
We also took time last weekend to make corn stalk bales. We use them for bedding and in our feed rations. This is my dad running the batwing to shred them off prior to baling.
This is a boring job but it I got to listen the ball games on the radio. I enjoy listening to Illini games on saturday and then I caught some of the baseball playoffs sunday. Of course its always good to spend quality time with wrigley.
This is nick running our new to us this spring baler. Its a 3 year old 567. I had no idea baling could be this much fun! I do NOT miss using the 535 baler although it is still in the shed.
We baled 275 bales on this farm. If anyone has a couple minutes free time they need to be moved off the field and across the road so we can spread fertilizer and do some tillage. When we finish harvest we will get them moved into winter storage.
I dont recall what he is staring at in this picture but he misses very little, well except the about 18 hours a day he sleeps! I guess we all need our rest. Hope everyone else is having a nice fall. Weather permitting we will finish up in a couple days. I will take time and get some pics of bean harvest and fall tillage this week. bill

Today's Featured Article - Grain Threshing in the Early 40's - by Jerry D. Coleman. How many of you can sit there and say that you have plowed with a mule? Well I would say not many, but maybe a few. This story is about the day my Grandfather Brown (true name) decided along with my parents to purchase a new Ford tractor. It wasn't really new except to us. The year was about 1967 and my father found a good used Ford 601 tractor to use on the farm instead of "Bob", our old mule. Now my grandfather had had this mule since the mid 40's and he was getting some age on him. S
