TO-30 rear seals

My budy and I are trying to replace the rear axle
seals on our TO-30. The brakes are slipping
because they're soaked with gear oil.
We had a heck of a time pulling the first seal.
How do we get the new ones in seated straight
without bunging them all up? The last guy made a
mess. And how should the surfaces be prepped for
a good seal? Any advice would be appreciated.
