The calculator use for simple math is too slow for some people using abacus. Texas Instrument(?) years back had trouble selling calculators to Quantus, the reason given was the freight handlers and clerks said they were too slow compared to the abacus they had been trained to use since WW2. Salesman had a challenge -his calculator against dock foreman doing random freight bills for past month using chinese pattern saroban/abacus. 1 hour and few minutes later dock foreman done with no errors, calculator user only 3/4 through pile and had about 10% errors. Ergomanic consulants figured later that calculator user had to do 2 or 3 finger movements more than abacus user- the "function" key before starting problem, a "sum" or "total" key at end and "subtotal" or "subfunction" while adding and discounting during problem. Abacus users just moved the beads and had result immediatly in view, could then do immediate subtract or decimal shift instead of hitting couple more keys. Also didn"t have to worry about batteries or electric cords, glare against screen to view, minor enviromental problems like rain shorting out keypad. RN

Now my grandfather had had this mule since the mid 40's and he was getting some age on him. S
