I"m going to be 50 next year and went through engineering school in the early "80s and never had to use a slide rule. Have my Father"s on a shelf near my desk along with the instruction manual. Manual is ~150 pages. Like buggy whips, some things are bound to become obsolete. Having said that, as an engineer, I think one of the most valuable things to be able to do is visualize a problem and be able to describe it. Once you can do that many times the answer becomes easy (or at least easier) to see. It is my observation that some of the modern tools help this process, but at the expense of actually understanding what it is you are trying to solve. Of course the flip side has some validity as well. As an engineer I often make "simplifying assumptions" to be able to come up with a workable solution. Modern tools have made it easier to delve into these assumptions and decide if it is reasonable to ignore it or should we take time and try to describe it further.
Interesting discussion, probably going to get poofed when somebody starts to make it ugly somehow.
