I don't know much about this, but we had a 2.8 v6 in a bronco II I believe it was a 84, It was a solid lifter engine so was a little noisy. I know it had a stand alone electronic Ign. It had the Ford box on the fender well. Then we got a Ranger with a 2.9 V6 in 86 Its ign had the ign module on the dist. You could turn that dist, and the computer would set the timing where it wanted to. Unless you turned it to far and it couldn't. I understood that the 4.0 came from this engine 2.9, just had a longer stroke. The 4.0 came in Explorer's made millions of them. Somebody like Summit will have a stand alone dist. Vic
