A buddy of mine installed a battery powered soil sampler probe on his pickup to do his custom soil testing. The thing uses a starter motor to turn a hydraulic pump to drive the probe into the ground. The thing has enough power to jack the rear of the pickup right off the ground in hard soil, s it takes a lot of amps for about 15 seconds of every minute. works the heck out of the battery and alternator. He would normally use up a battery and alternator every year with this setup.
He finally changed to the largest Optima red top that he could fit. The battery and alternator were still going after 4 years. That battery could stand the heavy cycling plus it relieved a little of the shock loading on the alternator while the probe was operating.
