I guess I stand alone as I do believe that they do work based on some information I have heard.
My brother worked as a Wildlife and Parks officer for about 45 years and used to have to pickup hit deer from the roadways. One high mileage driver in his area had a very high annual deer/vehicle hit rate until he finally installed deer whistle devices on his company pickup. His hit rate fell by about 80% annually. That is good enough stats for me to spend $10.
My brother explained how the whistles work from what he had been told. The deer aren't scared away, the whistle sound causes them to freeze movement as they try to pinpoint the sound.
I have seen many deer do just that as I approach, they lift their head and halt movement.
Feel free to call me a sucker for buying them if you wish, but for $10 I do believe they provide at least some degree of help and so far I've never hit a deer. I've formed my opinion and am sticking to it.
I might add that it is said to be unwise to honk your horn at deer. They can't always tell where the sound is coming from and can act irrationally. Instead, flash your headlights at them and they immediately recognize where the danger is and act accordingly.

In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
