Yes. I've got two. Both 1981. The one in the photo was literally owned by a "little old man" who never drove it in the winter. It only has 80K and runs like new. And yeah, 45 MPG is the usual for highway driving.
The other one I have has 340,000 miles and still going - but it's rusted to death. I got it from the original owner down the road from me.
Those little Isuzu 1.8 diesels are amazing. Especially when you consider that Isuzu made them from existing gas engine platforms.
I've also got a 2.2 in my 1985 mini-truck. Also is bullet-proof.
By the way, I used to hear people joke about how gutless diesel Chevettes were (or are). I think it's got plenty of power. My first Chevette was a 1976 with a 1.6 and this diesel is more gutsy.
