I got a '06 6.0L. I too drive it about 5,000 miles a year. I haven't had any problems with it since I bought it 1 1/2 years ago. But the previous owner had 2 oil coolers, 2 egr coolers, and 1 set of head gaskets put on under the factory warranty between 50,000-80,000 miles. It has 120k on it now. The only thing I have replaced is the cracked y pipe ($500) and new tie rod end ($115). Not to mention replacing worn out 12.50x35x20 tires at $2000 that I knew it needed when I bought it.
I figured if the engine would last 25,000 miles (5,000 x 5 year payments) I could then afford to fix it when it breaks. I will put the arp head studs and egr delete kit on it when the egr cooler goes next time. Then, it will be one stout truck. I love mine, but know it is only due time till the cooler or head gaskets let go again. All diesel trucks have their downside. It is a pick your poison no win situation with any diesel from 03-08.

But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
