turbo seals are not regular seals.. the are like washers that only work when the oil pressure hits thems and they push out and hopefully let the oil go down to the return line.
due the the 1300 degrees, regular seals dont work. so they are a weird animal at best.
make sure the return line is always at the bottom and free and clear of caked up oil so there is absolutely no resistance in the drain. return lines are usually over sized to allow the oil a quick path away from the turbo bearings or otherwise the seals will leak. If someone ran low grade oil, the return lines will have sludge buildup and cause a turbo to start using oil. Most manuals called to replace the return line when ever working on a turbo.
