The reason you may not have had codes is some codes need to mature into actual faults. Some codes mature faster, especially after a battery disconnect because the monitor responsible for that code must meet certain enabling criteria. The P0420 needs to the have catalyst monitor armed which means highway driving for at least 5 minutes at 55 mph after a warm-up from a cold start. Some set sooner, like the misfire monitor. In order to turn on MIL for misfire the misfires need to reach a level in an rpm window that federal law says will increase emissions too much. What they say is too much and what you say, which is it doesn't run bad are two different things. The PCM is not "seeing" the crank speed up enough relative to the cam after the combustion event. This could be an issue with air, fuel or spark in that cylinder. It's pointing you to cylinder #1. The efficiency code, P0420, doesn't mean it needs a catalytic converter. It could be as simple as a set of plugs. Without raw data from a diagnostic tool there is only so much you can do. When the converter is cold hit the bottom with a rubber mallet and see if it rattles. Hope this helps. Gerard
