Interesting on the bears going to the sound of gunshots. No Grizzlies here and I'd like to keep it that way. Grizzlies weren't here in colonial days.
For the past 40 years there have been occasional sighting of black bears here, supposedly they were going from the mountains, which are in sight of me on a clear day, to the swamps in the middle to lower part of the state. There is a national forest down river from the area where the bear was killed. It was originally farms and is now managed for hunting and for tree farming. Speaking of swamps, there is the Congaree National Monument, I think it's called, below Columbia, the State capitol. It's a swamp along the Congaree river which is fairly large since it drains a good third of the state. It has huge pine and cypress trees and is flooded in wet weather. During a dry spell my wife and I walked from the park headquarters over to the river. The walk is several miles along trails. I saw deer and wild hog tracks and a bobcat track, but no bear tracks.
