Nope. I can't claim Homestead in any of my places in Michigan although I DO have one right now.
I used to think New York was the most screwed up state when it came to bureaucracy. No more. Michigan gets first prize. I've been to court almost every year via the Michigan Tax Tribunal out of Lansing. I've also won every time - but it's a huge time waster.
Every year they royally screw something up. This time? I bought a foreclosed house in Maple Ridge Township, Alpena County. Paid $10,000 cash. That was June 3, this year. I just got my tax bill yesterday. They assessed it at $32,000 (screw up #1). And they gave me 100% Homestead exemption (screw up #2). So, they've assessed it at three times it's market value, but only charged me half of the tax rate because they gave me a Homestead Exemption which I never applied for. In fact, they sent the bill here to my home in New York.
So, unless they fix this mess come tax grievance time this Spring, I'll be going to court again . . . and I will win again. I'd call it harassment, but it's more about sheer incompetence.
