Read up on the 1970's and see how that worked out for the USA, or, for a more up to date example, look at the robust economy of Cuba, after 52 years of absolute government controls I hear you can get a sack of beans if you know the right person. My Dad did some work in Cuba in the early 50's setting up a cow testing association and he told me that it was the best cattle country he had ever seen and had more cows than people, today it is a crime to possess beef without a government permit.
