my little red tractor I sold then had the folks come back a few weeks later saying the motor was shot..... (old post)....
FF to Thursday, neighbor kid went and picked it up to repair for them (1/3 the price other shops were quoting).... Things weren't as bad as they were told by the shops. One of the orings at the bottom of a cylinder let loose and drained the water into the oil pan...... He gave me a list of parts to pick up/order since I was going to the dealer anyway.
They woulda had to order the seals but had 3 complete kits (piston, rings, cylinders, and seals) that someone didn't pick up a couple years ago after leaving a deposit. Upshot, I got the three kits and a headgasket set for just under 200 bucks after a 20% rebate for paying cash and the 19% sales tax rebate. So, since the price was so good and I ended up with a good deal on my tires the other day, I'll pay the parts and they'll just have to pay the neighbor for labor and pickup/delivery of the tractor.
I feel better now... Could have happened to anyone, but ........
Sure they'll be happy also with an extra 500 bucks for Christmas (what they would have had to pay for the parts at normal price......
