The earliest colonies were founded as Protestant but I would not say the US was founded as a Protestant nation. The King (William) of England granted Cecilius Calvert (Lord Baltimore) a charter for the colony of Maryland knowing it would be for the benefit of (English) Catholics. Rhode Island was established for the express purpose of having a colony where the inhabitants could live knowing there was separation of church and state. I do not know of any proclamation by Washington or anybody else saying these principles were abolished upon joining the US. Of course even before the Revolution the lines were starting to blur as churches of Protestant or Catholic origins spread through out the colonies regardless of charters. I am not so sure England would have started its own church had Henry VIII been granted his divorce. Anything I have read about Henry VIII indicates he was quite happy being a Catholic before the divorce issue surfaced. While many eventual Protestants had legitimate grievances (indulgences) against Rome the founding of the Church of England does not have a foundation of noble roots. Divorce was not an issue to majority of people at that time.

On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
