If you have any doubt about the relationship between Protestants and Catholic in the colonies, may I suggest reading any of the hostory fo the Cajon people? The account stated even by the Catholics that now live between New Orleans and Houston tell of how the Protestants in the colonies would not allow any Catholic growth because of fear that a new persecution would develop. I realize the irony, that the Protestants were actually persecuting in the name of religious liberty by driving the Catholics away. While many of those who founded the settlements were motivated by profit, the lion share of those leaving Europe to build new lives in the New World did so to escape Catholic persecution, with atleast one settlement attempting to escape moderate Protestantism. Even at the time of our indepenence, The church at Rome was the subject of great angst here in America. The First Amendment's freedom of religion provision was not insisted by Deists as is popular lore these days, but by churches fearfull of a new Papal rise to power asserting that power here. Christmas was seen by these early Americans not as the celebration of Christ birth, but as a symbol of a Papacy not highly regarded here. George Washington's first Thanksgiving address leaves no doubt that he was addressing a Christian population, but a Protestant people to be sure. Very few today see Christmas as a Roman Holiday imposed on Christians, yet, I fully respect those who do. I do not support Santa Clause or the pagan traditions that have melted into the Catholic Celebration. If Christ birth is to be honored it will not include any pagan traditions. I support a very purged Christmas. Growing up in New Hampshire there was still a high number of Protestant clergy with a well document case against any celebration of Christmas.
