Dave, It's all torque or a lever problem. You can lift more when the object's center of gravity is closer to the back wheels. It's possible you may not be able to lift 1000 pounds if it were extended 10 ft behind the tractor. If I were in charge of rating 3-pt hitches, which I should be, I would measure it in lb-ft of torque:) Have a Merry Christmas. George
