If the "correct" points assembly is overheating, a couple (could be other mechanical heat retention issues) electrical related issues come to mind.
1) The coil, and the points which switch coil current on and off, ARE CARRYING/SWITCHING TOO MUCH CURRENT. A typical Kettering Coil Ignition System like used on our old tractors limits point current switching to not much over 4 or so amps.
a) Perhaps because it isn’t the correct coil (like a 6 volt rated unballasted coil operating at 12 volts) b) Perhaps the coil is just going bad and the points are switching too much current. c) Perhaps you have a 12 volt tractor using a 6 volt rated coil but the voltage dropping (12 to 6) ballast resistor (that’s in series between ign switch and coil) is by passed or shorted around or just bad. d) Perhaps it’s a 6 volt rated coil on a 12 volt tractor that has the starting ballast by pass system but its bad so the coil is operating at 12 volts unballasted all the time. e) Perhaps it just baddddddd points
MECHANICAL ISSUES
a) Are you using cam grease on the distributors cam ???????????? b) Are the distributors bushings okay so the cam and shaft isnt wobbling around???
2) One purpose of the condensor is to extend the life of the points, if its bad or open or not grounded the points can burn up much sooner.
SUMMARY
You need to insure it’s the correct coil (6 or 12 volt and tractor voltage is ???),,,,,,,,,,,Insure the condenser is good and its grounded,,,,,,,,If it’s a 12 volt tractor using a 6 volt rated coil insure the voltage dropping (12 down to 6) ballast resistor is in place and working and not by passed or shorted etc.,,,,,,,,,,,,cam grease,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,distributor bushings okay,,,,,,,,,

Today's Featured Article - Earthmaster Project Progress Just a little update on my Earthmaster......it's back from the dead! I pulled the head, and soaked the stuck valves with mystery oil overnight, re-installed the head, and bingo, the compression returned. But alas, my carb foiled me again, it would fire a second then flood out. After numerous dead ends for a replacement carb, I went to work fixing mine.I soldered new floats on the float arm, they came from an old motorcycle carb, replaced the packing on the throttle shaft with o-rings, cut new ga
