There are probably 10+ miles of road in our county that are still legally "roads", but are totally unmaintained, unsigned, and only access farmland. There are probably another 10+ miles that show up on maps that simply never existed.
The township to the east of us has recently had road signs placed showing intersections from a state highway to side roads and subdivision streets that don't exist. The roads were plattted decades ago, show up on county maps, but were never built, and never will be. They show up on some GPS's, intersection signs are there, and if you turn, you crash into highway right-of-way fence or someone's house. The clowns putting up the signs probably had to do some creative guessing where these non-existant streets should be. Some landowners took the signs down, but a few are still up.
These roads "exist" for one purpose. It isn't allowing about public access, it's for the tax money. Every mile of road on the books allows politicians to grab extra tax $$$ to "maintain" all of these roads, be it local, state or federal money.
