Folks, we are a product of 'averages', meaning the news people are always comparing today to the weather averaged over 10 years. Makes sense except the daily weather fluctuates greatly and our brains are now trained to think its the 'worst in X years'. It is very misleading. The daily weather is controlled by 2 things: the angle of the sun on the ENTIRE earth and the jet stream, which mixes ALL of it up in a completely erratic manner.
The whole global warming discussion is based on averages. Nature just does not work that way and never will. I happened to be in Vermont this summer 1 week before the flash floods, and was amazed some of the wood bridges were not built higher. A week later the same low bridges were gone or wrecked. Worst flood in 100 years they said. No kidding.
If you are trying to make money farming, or just don't want your house washed away, you have to be prepared for the extreme events in your area. Never count on the average.
