Green pulley: The recommended replacement for type "A" transmission fluid in John Deere equipment is Low Viscosity Hi-Guard. I have used this in everything from Combine hydrostatic drive units to steering boxes. Including the hydrostatic lawn tractors like the 318. It is safer to use than some of the newer transmission fluids. They can have additives that will react with the older seals and vanes.
I also have found that it works better as power steering fluid in My Dodge pickups. The service manuals state not to use "red" colored transmission fluid in the steering units. Says that the additives may make the unit leak.
