Where to start................ First of all... How do you know it's hot? THe display? Is it pushing coolant out? Have you checked the head temperature with an IR heat gun? Just because the diplay squeals at you or gives you a shutdown doesn't mean it's really hot... If you're getting erratic temperature changes on the display I would suspect the wiring first before the actual temperature. Beyond that I would check the belt tension. Pull the rad clear of the cooler and really get in there with high flow air and BLOW the crap out. Then I would probably drain the cooling system and run a bottle of commercial cooling system flush through as directed and pull the lower rad hose and backflush again and again until it runs clear with no suds...
The short answer to your question is that if the water pump is bad... it will probably be loose at the bearing and the fan blade will have noticable movement... and when they get really bad the seal will leak and you will see drainage from the weep hole in the front of the pump housing as a result. One that is just starting to go will often not leave a puddle of coolant as it will evaporate on the engine front cover and just leave a green tracer running down the cover from the drain hole. So... verify the temperature with a heat gun... then proceed through checking the belt (as they do eat belts up), blowing the rad clean, flushing the cooling system... and then you can start looking at bad thermostat or a pressurised system from a bad head gasket.
