The clutch in the axle works the same as if the tire the side side the clutch is on was spinning.
The final drives can be switched to the opposite sides if you want the lever on the other side. One case where it is a good idea to switch final drives is when running the round baler of its time. Right hand on the steering wheel, left hand on the clutch lever as you look at the baler over your left shoulder. You have a knock out plate on the left side in the floor pan. The axle clutch was a week point in my CA. For pulling you can replace the clutch assembly with a solid pinion shaft without a problem. With many CA"s being sold for parts it might be easier to buy a CA final drive with the solid axle for pulling. Easy swap back and fourth if you see the need for the clutch in the future. I have a CA out back with both side solid pinion shafts.
