Diesel won't run worth a darn in an 8 to 1 spark ignition engine due to detonation. Detonation is what broke the pistons on the previously mentioned gasoline engine fuel with diesel. That is why all fuel engines have an 4 to 1 compression ratio to operate on diesel. 16 to 1 is used with a diesel engine for two primary reasons. #1 cold starting. #2 Higher mechanical efficiency on the power stroke. I was assuming you understood the basic fundamentals of the Otto cycle gasoline and diesel engines. How do you think they operate 11.5 to 1 compression ratios with 87 octane gasoline in direct injection spark engines?
