My family is well prepared as far essentials go. Always got a 1000 gallons of diesel here, 800 gallons of propane. House is run on solar electric. Also have an electric gen that runs on wood-gas. PTO gens and diesel gens. Many mechanically injected diesel tractors, cars and pickup trucks. Have around 15,000 rounds of ammo plus powder and reloading supplies. Leg-hold traps. Two years worth of food. Two years worth of firewood. Portable water filter, hand-crank grain mill, portable radiation detector, hand-pump for our drilled well, etc. Also have an "extra" house in the deep woods in the Adirondacks that is all solar powered.
But - what we are NOT prepared for is a way to protect out stuff if things get bad. People get nasty fast when they don't have what they want. I suspect if society crashes in any way - there will be hoards of people trying to take from others. Heck - FEMA et. al. are allowed to come to my house and take my solar panels if they deem they are needed for the "greater good."
In my opinion, anyone who has a family has an obligation to look a head a little bit. I can imagine living in a place that is fully dependent on the grid and grocery stores being open. Those that don't are often the first to whine to the government for help as soon as something goes wrong.
By the way, NO gold or silver. You could starve to death with a million in gold on hand. I suspect food, petro, hand tools and ammo would have high value during bad times.

Today's Featured Article - 12-Volt Conversions for 4-Cylinder Ford 2000 & 4000 Tractors - by Tommy Duvall. After two summers of having to park my old 1964 model 4000 gas 4 cyl. on a hill just in case the 6 volt system, for whatever reason, would not crank her, I decided to try the 12 volt conversion. After some research of convert or not, I decided to go ahead, the main reason being that this tractor was a working tractor, not a show tractor (yet). I did keep everything I replaced for the day I do want to restore her to showroom condition.
