I'm reworking an 8n and trying to find out how to determine whether my pistons are worn enough to need replacing or I can get away with a ring job and a valve job. (How much piston to sleeve gap is OK?)
Before I tore it down, it had poor compression (I didn't measure this, but could tell from the poor performance) and was burning a lot of oil, but the intake valve guides were clearly the source of a lot of the oil (the intake ports were covered with oil and the valves had a lot of slop in the guides) and it was in bad need of a valve job so the compression issue was clearly not all ring related.
The sleeves do not have much of a ridge in them and look pretty clean overall I have not pulled the pistons yet (will do so tomorrow.) I can mic the sleeves and pistons if need be, but do not know the specs for this or whether one can just put a feeler between the piston and sleeve to determine the wear.
It also had very low oil pressure so may need bearings and an oil pump.
I don't use this tractor a lot (I have 7 others and use this one for spreading compost only), so just getting it running better will probably get me to the end of my farming days.
